Thanksgiving Down Under Pt. 1

November 26, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving again to everyone!

It was so nice to be able to silently celebrate it on Thursday here in Sydney but then also see all my family celebrating as well on Friday, which was Thursday back at home (If you can´t keep up).

Now, on Sunday (tomorrow), I´m having a Thanksgiving dinner for all of my friends, which, interestingly enough, include very few Americans! I´ve been introduced to new culture and events here, I thought I´d return the favor and give people a taste of what I usually do for the holiday.

The menu includes:

  • A 10lb Turkey
  • Gravy (of course)
  • Garlic and Chive Mashed Potatoes
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Scalloped Corn
  • Killer Potatoes
  • Honey Glazed Carrots
  • Cornbread and Caramelized Onion Stuffing
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream

I am making these things with my friend Julie in her parents kitchen. Lucky I have access to a nice kitchen with nice dishes and utensils so I don´t end up doing everything like this:

Yep, that would be my ghetto mixing bowl I used to make the chocolate chip cookies because we don´t have any bowls in my house that are larger than a cereal bowl.

In preparation for tomorrow, (so that we´re not cooking the ENTIRE morning) I´ve shredded a few cups of cheese, shredded the potatoes for killer potatoes, cooked the sweet potatoes to be reheated and mashed, made a pan of cornbread (FROM SCRATCH) for the stuffing and, of course, made the chocolate chip cookies.

Consider me a Domestic Goddess. I know I do.

Thanksgiving things that they don´t sell in Australia:

  • Premade pumpkin pies
  • mashed pumpkin in a can
  • Jiffy cornbread mix

So, wish me luck on cooking a turkey for the first time :)

I´m going to follow this woman´s advice.
